History of Hair Essentials Part 1

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

We use several different hair products and accessories every day but do you ever wonder how we came across these luxuries in life?

Curling Iron

Imagine having your head burned over and over and your hair damaged because you wanted your hair curled to go out tonight.

The first curling irons were a rod of iron or bronze that was heated over a fire which allowed for no control over temperature. Now, remember we are looking back 6,000 years ago to when this ancient curling iron was used by Babylonians, Assyrians, Persians, Greeks and Egyptians.

It wasn’t until 1959, when Rene Lelievre and Roger Lemon invented The Electric Curling Iron that made it less risk of burning hair because there was more temperature control and it made curls more consistent.

Curling irons today have come along way and have made it easy to create beautiful curls in minutes for all occasions.

So, tonight when you pull out your curling iron, thank our ancestors for burning their heads.

Have you ever wore a comb in your hair to reflect your social status? Well, that’s why combs were worn as accessories in ancient China.

Combs originated in 5500 B.C. when ancient Egyptians carved out combs with pieces of emerging cultures and have been found across history by archaeologists.

In the 1930s and 1940s decorative hair combs were the accessory of choice, worn when sophisticated up-dos were the fashion.

However, combs have definitely advanced over the years into efficient hair maintenance and haircare tools. We now have hundreds of different combs today, that are designed for all hair types, lengths and textures. Most combs are made from plastic with teeth, called combdrumbs and vary in size and spacing. Combs are mainly used to tame stray hairs and detangle wet hair and can also be very handy when making a ponytail, to help keep it in place. Some combs are designed with a small thin handle, known as a rattail, which are great when parting your hair.

                                                                                                  Hair Dye

Today, about 70 percent of women colour their hair. Are you one of them?

Hair dye was accomplished by Egyptians in 1500 BC using henna to hide grey hair. Later Greeks and Romans used pigeon excrement to dye hair blonde and mixed leeches with vinegar and then sat in the sun to dye their hair black.

In 1863, English chemist William Henry Perkin created mauve hair dye named Mauveine.

In 1907, the founder of L’Oréal, Eugene Schueller created the first chemical dye for commercial purposes.

The struggle was real to get real colour, now you can go to the salon and choose from several different tones of just blonde or brown. Not to mention, every colour of the rainbow in ten different shades for each colour. We’re pretty lucky.

Straight hair became popular in the 1960s when women started to use clothing irons to press their hair straight. Don’t lie, you tried it. It worked, but it wasn’t safe!

Back in 1872, a Parisian man named Marcel Grateau invented the first straightener known as the Marcel Wave. A women, Erica Feldman was the first to try an ironing device to style her hair, using heated iron rods.

In 1906, Grateau created a more advanced heated styling tool with metallic teeth.

By 1909, Issac Shero patented the invention.

In 1912, Scottish heiress Lady Jennifer Bell Schofield came closest to creating the modern straighteners with a hinged, two plated iron. Hair straighteners known as flat irons which are hot metal plates pressed together to make hair look straight.

Today, hair straighteners are one of the most used hair tools.

Blow Dryer

The first model was invented in 1890 in France by Alexander F. Beau Godefroy in his salon.

In 1920 the first handheld hair dryer was created, it was big, bulky and overheated often. It only produced about 100 watts of heat making it take a long time to dry hair.

The Bonnet hair dryer was released in 1951. It was a hand held hair dryer connected by a tube to a bonnet that was worn on your head. Air flowed through the tube and came out through holes in the bonnet.

Before the hair dryer was designed men and women improvised using devices including a vacuum cleaner. So, maybe the Bonnet wasn’t so bad?

Today’s lightweight hair dryers weight about a pound and reach up to 2,000 watts making it a faster drying process. Cause who really has time to dry their hair in this busy world.

Hair Salon

The first hair salon was opened in Paris by hairdresser Champagne in 1600.

By the end of 1800s Martha Matilda Harper a self-made entrepreneur opened the first public  hair salon called The Harper Hair Parlor and she started training schools to employ women in the salon.

Onaré Salon located in Mississauga was established in           by Mario Verrilli. He has trained professional hairstylists/colourists to create the exact look you want and has been nominated Award Winning Hair Salon four years in a row.

In 2009, he  launched his line of cleaner hair care products called Saijojo – keeping the planet and health of consumers in mind – while still meeting the demands of the hairstylist.

The Bob is a classic any way you style it. The cut is gorgeous, even blunt length all the way around. Model Jordan Dunn rocks (right) the bob like no one else. The wavy bob is on-trend for 2017 and one of the best ways to add voluminous definition to hair and enhance the jaw.

The Slick And Shiny is another amazing style that looks beautiful on hair of all textures and lengths. The award winning pros at Onare can dupe this look in minutes with a generous dollop of styling cream applied from your roots to mid-length. Actress Shay Mitchell has been showing off the trend.

Spring Your Best Hair Forward

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

We at Onaré Salon, Top Choice Hair Salon in Mississauga understand that your excited for the sunny days ahead but you may not be looking forward to removing your winter hat. Yes, the cute one with the pom-pom on top that may have been hiding those roots, faded colour, frizzy, dry hair for the past few months. But, the time is coming quickly so it’s time to make some “me” time and get your hair did.

Loosing the Hat

Let it go! Like Spring cleaning – in with the new, out with the old. Take the hat off and come into Onaré Salon and why not try a new look this year? If you usually do blonde highlights for the summer, you could always add a few red highlights as well, just to give yourself a little spunk.

If you’ve always had long hair maybe it’s the year you try going short. It’s okay to step out of your comfort zone and give yourself a little change. And don’t worry, it will grow back!

Containing the Frizz

Hat hair is the worst. Try using Bumble and bumble (Bb) Defrizz to help smooth and tame all that static you have attracted during the winter. It will bring back your shine and leave your hair feeling soft.

The Needed Root Touch-Up

Hiding those roots was easy with your favourite hat to cover your head. Removing your hat is going to be a hard step but we at Onaré Salon can help to get those roots covered up and bring back your beautiful hair. We know your colour down to an art!

Trimming the Ends

Maybe you have been putting it off on getting your ends trimmed because your hair was just going under a hat anyway. Who was going to notice, right? Once the hat comes off, if no one else notices, you will. Come on in and get those damaged ends in here; so we can get rid of the breakage by cutting it off and starting fresh this Spring season.

Lowlights Put You in the Spotlight

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Written by: Krystal Saunders

Transform your hair this winter; by adding lowlights to your hair to bring your bright summer hair down to a more subtle shade. Darkening your hair with some lowlights will make your hair stand out with various complementary hues, while giving your hair texture and depth.

At award winning hair salon, Onaré, in Mississauga our experts who specialize in lowlights will give you the upmost colour treatment. Our colour technicians understand how the technique of lowlights involves darkening strands of your hair by applying colours that are darker than your natural hair colour to break up solidness and weaving in a lowlight of the appropriate contrasting colour. They are trained in balancing highlights and lowlights while still leaving shades of your natural hair too, to give you your own unique look. At Onaré we will be successful in giving you the correct level of darkness that will work best with your skin tone and make your eyes pop.

To keep your colour from fading, we recommend you use a sulphate free shampoo like Saijojo True Shampoo and Conditioner.

Keep in mind that lowlights are a great way to enhance your look because they will show off the lines in your haircut and make layers more noticeable. Dark accents make movement in your hair more visible, as well lowlights underneath will give your hair dimension and body to create the illusion of fullness.

Alo who? Alopecia

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

When people hear the word Alopecia, they tend to think skin disease because many people are unaware of what Alopecia is until they get it themselves. Alopecia actually means hair loss.

Alopecia is a common hair condition/disorder that many people do not know about, and we at Onaré Salon, Top Salon in Mississauga thought it would be a good idea to bring it to your attention.

Alopecia is not contagious and can arise at any age, even childhood, although it’s rare before the age of 3. This disease happens to both men and women and usually occurs to more than one family member because it is hereditary. Keep in mind that some types of Alopecia are more serious than others, as not all can be treated.

Types of Alopecia:

Alopecia Areata: a condition which causes round patches of hair loss anywhere on your body, hair can grow back, but it can also fall out again later

Alopecia Areata Incognita: arises with thinning of scalp hair

Alopecia Totalis: occurs when all scalp hair falls out

Alopecia Universalis: when your hair loss is from the entire body including your head, eyebrows, eyelashes, beard, legs, arms and pubic hair

Androgenetic Alopecia: this type of hair loss is permanent and occurs when hair on the head thins and then falls out

The cause of a Alopecia is still unknown but it’s thought to be triggered by a misguided immune system that mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissue. The cells react similar to an allergic reaction to your hair. This disease can sometimes be caused by stress and can be very emotionally devastating as the hair loss is right to the skin.

There isn’t a reliable cure yet for this disease or a method of prevention. However, there are many treatments which may allow the hair to grow back, but since each case of Alopecia is unique, it may take months for some people and for others the hair loss can remain permanent. These topical medications include anti-inflammatory drugs, creams and shampoos as well as, “Injections which are the most common and effective method of treatment,” according to Dermatologist, Dr. Eric Eisenberg, in Mississauga.

Injections of a steroid called Triamcinolone are administered by a physician into the bald spots where hair has fallen out. Regrowth of the hair will only occur in the area of injection and commonly hair will grow back white or grey before returning to its original colour. In some cases hair can regrow on its own. Everyone is different and hair can take between roughly 2 to 6 months before growing back completely.

At Onaré Salon, we are trained professionals when it comes to hair and find it very important to let our clients know of any hair conditions that may occur. We take informing our clients of damaged hair, dandruff, lice and other disorders such as Alopecia very seriously. We are here to help and provide advice on treatments as well as recommend techniques on how to cover Alopecia for special occasions. Just remember that you are not alone when it comes to hair loss,

even Christopher Reeve, Superman and Model, Tyra Banks had Alopecia.

Puff it, Poof it – Pompadour it!

Puff it, Poof it – Pompadour it!

Whether you call it the Duff Puff or a Snooki Poof it is a hairstyle that has been trending for years and works best with medium to long hair. We at Onaré,Top Hair Salon in Mississauga thought we would help with some tips on how this fabulous bump on your head is designed and how to get it to stay.

Duff Puff                                                                                                                                      Snooki Poof

After your hair is washed (using Saijojo True shampoo and conditioner), blowdried and straightened…

1. To start you will want to separate your hair by taking the section of your hair directly behind your forehead and hold it straight up in the air.

2. Now use Saijojo “BIG TEASE” for texture and hold at the roots. If your hair is very fine you will want to tease that portion of hair with a comb as well.

3. Use Onaré “ANYTHING YOU WANT” hairspray on your roots.

4. Next, you will want to create your Puff or Poof. Take your section of hair, pinch it just above the centre and pull it down towards your head while pushing your hair slightly forward and up until you have a bump at the height you like.

5. Apply about three bobby pins over the section of hair behind your Puff/Poof to firmly hold it in place.

6. Done. Now it’s up to you, if you’d like the rest of your hair to stay down or be pulled back into a ponytail. This will depend on your outfit, where your going and which style you prefer.

Today’s style of the Puff/Poof has been taken to the next level with the popular hairstyle called The Pompadour which was created back in the 1950s and can be styled in various chic looks for women and also styles well with short hair and can even look great on men.

Generally, this style is shaved on both sides or hair is combed tightly to the head to give the impression to look shaved, and the hair is teased on top. It can be taken to acute looks and be designed in a “Faux-Hawk” which is a fake Mohawk. Many celebrities including Miley Cyrus, Pink and Ruby Rose pull this hairstyle off well and we think you can too.

Summer Lovin’ – Hair Not So Much

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

With beautiful sunny days and blue skies and that light breeze through your hair, everyone loves summertime. Well, almost everyone.

Your hair goes through a lot during the hot weather season. The Toronto and Mississauga area tend to get humid and your hair says, “No thank you.” It tends to create frizz or flatten hair and even  causes your hair colour to fade and  go brassy.

Hair seems to have a mind of it’s own in the summer leaving you with very little control over it. Not to worry, that’s where Top Salon, Onaré Salon is here to help. We are resourceful and prepared for damage control and we are able to assist in maintaining and keeping your hair looking it’s best.

Hair Is Weak When Wet

This summer your probably thinking, “I can’t wait to go swimming!” While your saying this, your hair is thinking the total opposite because chlorine and the sun can be damaging to your hair and make your hair weak and dry, causing it to become brittle which can lead to split ends. It can also leave your hair knotted and strip your colour and no one wants that.

When spending a lot of time outside in the summer it’s important to wear a hat to protect your hair and scalp. We also recommend using products in your hair to help fight against UV rays.

Remember to always wet your hair before going in the pool as your hair can only absorb so much water ( this helps protect it from chlorine) and wash your hair after swimming to remove the chlorine and other chemicals from your hair and help prevent against damage to it. We recommend using Bumble and Bumble (Bb) Surf Foam Wash Shampoo to rebuild and retain body and texture for your hair.

If your headed to the beach try applying Saijojo Leave in Tonic followed by Bb Surf Spray when getting out of the water. Then comb through your wet hair so while it air-dries your hair is conditioned and you are left with a nice beach-wave style instead of leaving it impossible to detangle later and lead to breakage and shedding when you brush it. Trust us, your hair will thank you.
